The normal procedure for new cadets is to have the new cadet come in with one or both of their parents for an interview with the recruiting officer, to observe the unit during a drill, and to make sure that everyone knows what is expected of them before they join. Please note that only after all the paperwork required has been processed can a new cadet participate in unit activities due to insurance requirements.

For prospective adults, a background check is required before any interaction with the cadets is allowed; this is for the safety of the cadets. Also, once an adult has officially joined the USNSCC, there is some additional training that must be completed to progress past the rank of Instructor.
